TECHNOLOGY POPSを標榜しているならば避けて通れないのが、 みんな大好きYMOでし。日本において電子楽器を利用したPOPSを広めたパイオニアで、各自それぞれが技巧派ミュージシャンながら、果敢にも実験的なサウンド創りに挑んだ歴史が、すなわちYMOの歴史と言っても過言ではありません。そんな彼らの形跡 はここで語るまでもないので割愛するとして、この作品は彼らの残したアルバムの中でも実験要素の強い、より高い創造性感じさせる名盤であることは言うまで もないでしょう。2度のワールドツアーを経て世界的なグループに上り詰めた彼らが次に行き着く先として注目されたサウンド、それがこのモヤがかった陰鬱な ニューウェーブだったということで数多くのライトなファンを置き去りにしていったことは有名ですが、世界を体験してきた彼らが欧州のニューウェーブムーブ メントに呼応するかのような作風に至ったのはなんら不思議ではないのかもしれません。
さて、このアルバムはそれまでの作風に比べてかなり機械 的、マシナリーなイメージを感じます。使用楽器は以前よりシンプルになったはずなのですが、その分音数も少なくなり、その音の隙間がより機械っぽく感じさ せるのでしょうか。また、このアルバムから明らかにスネアドラムが違います。ゲートリバーブを多用した腰の入ったドラム音色が、高橋幸宏の几帳面なドラミ ングと相まって、さらにマシナリーに感じさせるのです。また、積極的に参加していないと言われている坂本龍一の自暴自棄的な攻撃的なシンセ音色が、実はこ のアルバムの個性を引き出していて、リメイクされた「千のナイフ」の強烈なシンセソロや、フランジャーかけ過ぎで原型をとどめていない「Happy End」なんかはこの作品のハイライトとも言える前衛的サウンドです。ラストに無限上昇音装置を使用した松武秀樹の「LOOM」は、その実験的作風の象徴 とも言えるでしょう。
そんな数多くのYMOマニアから愛される中期の名盤ですが、それはYMOの御三方の力量が遂に白日の下に曝された攻撃的な実験作ということと、なおかつ意外にも歌モノPOPSとして成立してしまっている部分があるからだと思っています。
